Entry-Level FIFO Resume

How to Build an Entry-Level FIFO Resume With No Mining Experience

Breaking into FIFO work without mining experience is common. Employers hiring for entry-level positions — trade assistants, labourers, utility workers, camp staff, trainee operators — are mostly looking for people who are safe, reliable, physically capable and willing to learn.

Your resume's job is to show those qualities using the experience you genuinely have. You don't need to pretend to have mining experience, and you shouldn't.

Focus on transferable skills

Think about what your previous work has in common with a mine site:

  • Shift work, early starts or long hours (hospitality, manufacturing, nursing, retail).
  • Physical or outdoor work (farming, landscaping, construction, warehousing).
  • Operating vehicles or equipment (forklifts, tractors, delivery vehicles).
  • Following procedures and safety rules (factory, food handling, Defence Force).
  • Working in a team under pressure, or in remote locations.

Write your bullets around these overlaps — for example, "Operated a counterbalance forklift in a busy distribution centre, following site traffic rules."

Show the training and tickets you actually hold

Put tickets and training near the top when you're new to the industry. A current driver's licence, first aid, White Card or forklift licence can all be relevant, depending on the role. If you've completed a nationally recognised course, list the unit code and title exactly as they appear on your certificate.

If you're booked into a course, say so with the date — for example "[Course name] — booked for [month year]". Never list a ticket you haven't completed.

Demonstrate reliability and safety awareness

  • Show tenure where you have it — staying in a job for a year or more matters.
  • Mention any safety responsibilities, such as first aid officer or fire warden.
  • Note if you can pass drug and alcohol testing and a pre-employment medical, if the ad asks.
  • Be clear about availability and your willingness to work rosters away from home.

Tailor the resume to each role

Entry-level FIFO ads vary a lot. A camp attendant ad and a trade assistant ad value different things. Match your summary and skills to the ad's wording where it honestly describes you, and move the most relevant experience higher up.

Keep it to one or two pages, in a clean layout without columns or graphics — see our FIFO resume example for a simple structure.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Claiming mining experience or tickets you don't have — they will be checked.
  • A generic objective like "seeking any FIFO job" instead of a targeted summary.
  • Leaving out non-mining jobs that show reliability and hard work.
  • Unexplained gaps — a short note (travel, study, caring) is fine.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a FIFO job with no experience?

Yes. Many entry-level roles are open to people from other industries, especially if you're reliable, fit for work and hold relevant basic tickets.

What tickets help for entry-level FIFO jobs?

It depends on the role. A current driver's licence and first aid are commonly useful; some roles ask for a White Card or specific units. Check the job ad before paying for courses.

Should I say I have no experience on my resume?

No need to highlight it. Lead with transferable skills and training, and let your work history speak for itself.

Should I include hospitality or retail jobs?

Yes. They show customer service, shift work and reliability — all valued in camp and site roles.
